Being a photographer for more than 10 years, believe me that I tried all areas of specialization before finding my voice. One of them was newborn photography.
So, I went to Paris to train with a renowned photographer and spent two days in an overheated room talking in a low voice while bathing in the smell of dirty diapers. The images of this photographer were incredible, and her ability to remain calm, gentle, patient, amazed me. I discovered all the behind the scenes of these magical images that move us so much, and also the entrepreneurial aspect of facing a booming market, very promising, and whose, a priori, the clientele was everywhere in the world, and couldn’t suddenly disappear.
After these two days of training, the trainer comes to talk to me and asks me how I will apply this to my photography business. I thanked her warmly, and continued by explaining to her that I will not develop this branch of my business. She remains speechless and tells me she feels sorry for me. Still, I thank her again. Because thanks to her and this training, I was able to avoid going into a field that was not made for me, invest hundreds and thousands of euros in the necessary equipment, accessories, and spend a lot of time communicating about this new option in our studio. Then, one way or another, I will have discovered that it sounded false.
I don’t have the necessary temperament; I don’t have that magical patience and that incredible feeling that newborn photographers have and that instantly puts the little one to sleep.
It’s not for me, and that’s totally ok!
I was then able to eliminate this option from my list and come even closer to what I liked the most, and where I was therefore necessarily going to be passionate about, wedding photography!
And my passion was transmitted to my newlyweds, who left with stars in their eyes after each appointment, and above all convinced of having by their side for this day someone who was going to give everything for them, and not just a photographer doing weddings to make ends meet.
This anecdote, perhaps a bit long, is something that sticks in my mind. I know that I cannot do something that does not inhabit me. I know it’s no use for me to insist if it’s not for me.
Do not hesitate to test, to try, but above all to recognize the signs. Doing podcasts every week exhausts you in advance? Find another medium. Doing customer listings makes you want to jump out the window? Outsource.
Whatever your field, profession or business, be sure that Monday is good news. If you’re dragging your feet at the start of the week, maybe it’s time to get back to the source of what motivated you to become an entrepreneur and refocus on what is really for you!
Until next week,
